Given that, the settlements that they live in cease to be simple settlements. They form bonds with each other, and instead of being settlements, they become communities. But there are also those who commit a crime. Not a big crime. But enough to garner some level of punitive action. Not the kind that would result in incarceration, but still the kind of thing that should be punished. Which means that they can be sentenced into volunteerism in lieu of a jail sentence.
There are certain times of the year where people feel the need to volunteer. This is especially prevalent during religious holidays. People get all spiritual and altruistic, suddenly overcome with a desire to help their fellow man, a desire that fades as soon as the season ends. The rest of the year, the institutions that need help often find themselves lacking in that department. So, if somebody wants to render some aid, then the chances to do so can be easily found online.
Animals needs help. They are generally aware of their surroundings. They also have feelings, and more than capable of love. But they do not always get to give that love away. Instead, they end up at a shelter.
The environment is also something that can be helped with. A community should be beautiful. But some of them are littered with garbage and debris. Picking some this up, while unable to reverse the effects of climate change, can have a transformative effect on the people.
Now, on to the people. Sometimes, life just deals someone a bad hand and they end up on the streets. On these streets, they often find themselves having to scrounge garbage canisters for food and not having a secure place to sleep. Now, there are places out there that offer meals and beds, but their space and supplies are limited. Not to mention they also sometimes lack the manpower needed to keep them running smoothly.
Fairness and equality are not the way of the world. The truth is, they never have been. But just because they never have been, does not mean they never will be.
