By Carolyn Hayes

While there are still millions of people all over the world that struggle to survive from day to day, many more millions lead secure lives. They do not worry about food or shelter. Many will even describe them as privileged. Yet so many of these people are not happy with their own lives. They suspect that there is more to life and they desire to find out what it is. For help in this area, personal growth mentoring may just be the answer.

When people are determined to better themselves, they are often at a loss about where to begin. They do not know what their options are and they are often not even sure in which ways they want to be growing as individuals. In such cases it may be a good idea to hire the services of a mentor that specialize in helping people to achieve their individual and unique development objectives.

It is important to remember that no mentor worth his salt will prescribe to his client. The mentor is not a teacher, but rather a personal coach that can help the client to achieve self actualization. The client must maintain responsibility for all his actions and decisions and the mentor will at best be a guide and a sound board. This is a very important role and it can certainly help people to restructure their thoughts.

Most mentors will start off by helping their clients to have a very good, honest look at themselves. They will lead them towards discovering those areas of life that is unsatisfactory, the areas that the client perceive as weak points and also the areas in which the client feels that he excels. This process may also involve an investigation of all the secret wishes and longings of the client.

Once these areas that needs to be developed are identify, it is necessary to set objectives. Far too many people develop vague objectives that indicate an intention to do something about this or that. This is not good enough. An objective needs to be exact. It needs to be measurable and it must contain a target date. If this is not done there is no way in which to clearly know when an objective is achieved.

Even when they have set proper goals, many people become discouraged when they do not perceive progress. That is why the mentor will help his clients to break down each goal into small little steps that can be achieved quickly. This will help the client to realize that he is indeed making progress towards the finishing line.

It can be difficult to choose a suitable mentor. The relationship between the mentor and his client need to be based on mutual trust and confidentiality. Many professional mentors offer a free first consultation and some will even refer the prospective client to a colleague that is better equipped to fulfil the needs of the individual concerned. Some people change mentors every now and again.

Mankind will never be satisfied with the status quo. People believe that there is always something else to strive for. Mentors can definitely help people to discover a deeper meaning in their own lives and also the relationship between their own lives and the lives of all the other people around them.
