Therapists have to deal with a very wide variety of problems and many of them choose to specialize in certain areas. General therapists almost exclusively deal with patients that have no specific complaint. They just feel tired, demotivated, depressed and they often have a low sense of self worth. They need someone to talk to and therapists give them the ear that they crave and lead them towards finding solutions for themselves.

Many patients see therapists because they are struggling to work through the effects of severe trauma. They may have lost their jobs, gone through a divorce or experienced extreme violence. They may have lost a loved one or contracted a dread disease. In these cases the therapists will help their patients to face the trauma and to work out strategies to prevent it from crippling their day to day lives.

Most therapists prefer to mix individual sessions with at least the occasional group session. That is because so many patients feel alone and abandoned. Therapists are not magicians that have ready made solutions to every problem. Patients have to understand that the process can be lengthy and that it may take a lot of time before real progress is made. The counselor cannot solve the problems of the patient. Only the patient himself can do that. The role of therapists is to help their patients to identify their problems and to work out strategies in order to deal with them.

There are so many people that never receive treatment because they think that it is a sign of weakness to see therapists. They reckon that each individual has to deal with his problems personally. They think that it is disadvantageous to admit a weakness. None of these preconceptions are true. It is most certainly not only weak people that see therapists.

Psychological conditions can be just as debilitating as physical illnesses. Therapists do an important job in helping people to live balanced lives. They teach them how to cope with the stress of modern life and how to live life fully.
