Some Experiences And Trainings Needed To Become A Voice Coach

By Sandra Martin

A voice coach or also called as a vocal coach is the one who teaches and instructs the singers on how they are going to improve some of their techniques in singing and also, on how to develop and take care of their voice. There are some coaches who may teach lessons, workshops, and master classes to individual singers privately. They can also guide a singer who is having a practice or may be having a recording. Most coaches focus on popular or classical music, while some provides singing techniques such as breathing, pronunciation, and diction.

Most often, a voice coach produces and writes the lyrics for the vocal arrangements of both the backup and secondary singers. Others became advisers to singers and bands for the production of music such as writing the lyrics. Critics to this are rising. There are issues about the popular recordings which are credited to the singer instead of voice coach Los Angeles resulting to not acknowledging the coaches for the lyric writing.

Starting from the year 2000, there is already an increased number of recording soft wares containing different algorithms for vocal processing and digital correction devices for pitch. These soft wares have reduced the roles of the vocal coaches. Before, if a producer wants to have a recording with a person who does not have that much vocal skills, that person must be under a vocal coaching for a few weeks to learn the song and to improve the diction and tone as well.

In Los Angeles, CA, training and education of the coaches varies widely. Most are former singers professionally and some also are singers currently. Some of them have formal trainings such as Bachelors of Music, Masters of Music, having Conservatory Diplomas, and having degrees related to posture techniques, foreign languages, breathing methods, and even human kinetics.

There are some who may have little experiences only of formal trainings which is the reason why they enhance their skills through performing experiences. Others are not under any trainings and they are usually in the music styles and in the classical milieu. Examples of it are language speakers moving into different countries to teach diction to vocal students, thus, they may develop their singing styles.

Others are having a profession which is musically related such as the rehearsal pianists found in the musical theaters. While some professions do not have any relations to music. Examples are yoga techniques and some other aspects that involve medically the throat and vocal cords.

This kind of field is very competitive most especially in higher or professional levels. The salary may vary on work conditions. Though there are some who have the freedom to command their own rates.

Most professionals for music and art have salaries which are lower than average salaries of the other professions. This can happen when they are required a similar amount for their education and their experience. Examples of higher paid professions are economists and also the bank managers.

Work conditions may vary widely. It will depend whether you are doing part time or freelance work in opera companies or in recording companies. There may also have full time contracts when you work in universities or in musical theater companies.
